WHAT YOU NEED TO CONSIDER ….

 

  • BE CLEAR ABOUT YOUR GOALS

(Is this for your own enjoyment or for income?)

  • REVIEW YOUR FINANCES & SET A BUDGET YOU CAN AFFORD

(be prepared for the unexpected)

  • CONSULT WITH A FEW CONTRACTORS

(ask for referrals from friends, Realtors, local building supply outlets)

  • DO RESEARCH REGARDING THE NEED FOR BUILDING PERMITS

(ensure you have those prior to starting any work and that the permits are closed when work is done)

  • FOR BASEMENT APARTMENTS, CHECK WITH THE MUNICIPALITY

(ensure bylaws and municipal rules allow it, and what steps are needed including inspections)

  • CONTACT AN EXPERIENCED, LOCAL REAL ESTATE AGENT

(get their opinion, input and ideas and find out the impact of the renovations on the resale price and the desirability of the changes for a future buyer)
